Office 365 - Using SharePoint alerts without Exchange license

One of our Office 365 customers has around 500 SharePoint Online licenses. They would like those users to be able to use the alert functionality in SharePoint. There is only one problem, the users are not employees of the company but partners. They have an username, @contoso.com, but are not Contoso employees so they never receive an e-mail.

To solve this issue you have to go to the SharePoint Administration section in the Office 365 administration center. Click at Manage User Profiles and Manage User Properties. Open the settings menu of the Work e-mail field and set Allow users to edit values for this property to Yes.

The users are now able to change their e-mail address. The synchronization can take up to 24 hours but after that alerts will be send to an active e-mail address.
